Frog Hollow Halloween Carnival 2015

It was the 15th annual Halloween Carnival (known as the Pumpkin Patch in the City) at Frog Hollow Neighborhood House the past weekend on Saturday, October 23rd, 2015. The event is usually held the weekend before Halloween. We attend every year for the past 4-5 years since Brandon was a little toddler. It's walking distance near home and it's a fun event for the kids.

There were lots of games, activities, and small prizes for the little ones. There was even a pumpkin patch in the playground for those little ones to pick out their own pumpkins to bring home.

Brandon had so much fun here:

Various entertainment was showing throughout the day which included performers, magicians, dancing, and demo from the Academie Duello (a Martial Arts School of Swordplay).

Koba's The Great Big Show" Brings Children's TV Characters to the Stage

Koba Entertainment announced a brand new live, interactive and family-friendly stage show visiting 38 western Canadian cities in 2016. “Koba’s The Great Big Show” is the company’s first-ever live family theatrical tour that features lovable and endearing characters from four of the top-rated preschool shows on television today. Starring Franklin the Turtle, a Canadian icon in children’s entertainment for more than 20 years, as well as The Backyardigans, Max & Ruby and Mike the Knight, the all star cast will perform original, interactive songs for families kicking off January 23 in Manitoba.

“My challenge is to design each quadrant of The Great Big Show as a different unique adventure, whether it’s travelling the south seas with The Backyardigans, partying with Max & Ruby, guessing riddles with Franklin the Turtle or discovering chivalrous talents with Mike the Knight,” says Patti Caplette, Koba Entertainment’s award-winning, producing artistic director. “My passion is to bring families, young and old, to the theatre – the world’s greatest of all art forms.”

Adapting iconic characters from the animated screen to the live stage, is a professional challenge that continues to inspire and drive Koba’s entire creative production team. “With more than 25 costume and character changes, this mega-production promises to keep the entire cast, crew and audiences on their toes,” says Caplette.

In “Koba’s The Great Big Show,” families embark on a musical adventure that encompasses Koba’s most popular stage productions. The imaginative Backyardigans travel from the frozen north to the sunny seas and home again just in time for a snack. “Hilarious results arise when everybody’s favourite bunny siblings Max & Ruby encounter strange party guests,” says Caplette. Fans will also have fun playing riddles and rhymes with Franklin the Turtle and his Woodland pals. They’ll also join the chivalrous Mike the Knight and his friends on adventures in the magical kingdom of Glendragon.

SFU Budding Scientist Research Program

Back in Kindergarten, I signed Brandon up for the SFU Budding Scientist Research Program - The Centre for Research on Early Child Health and Education (CRECHE). I had him participate in the research that investigates development of executive functions and literacy. Kids had the opportunity to engage in learning experiences that aim to increase science literacy through awareness of conservation issues, marine biology, animal biology, human health, physics, and environmental science.

I think it's a great program for Brandon and his learning. His recent field trip was to the Vancouver Aquarium the past weekend on October 17th, 2015. I let him bring his camera to take photos. Here are some of the photos he took.

Brandon really liked his facepaint of the orca whale.

Anti-blue Light Glasses

Because Little Brandon is using his computer and iPad more often, I let him borrow my anti-blue light glasses from Spektrum. He was willing to wear them whenever he uses the tablets, computers, or other electronic devices for screen time. Check out my Spektrum Glasses review over on my main blog at jennieyuen.com.

Just a photo of him in the glasses (for fun).

Kids Academy Children's Educational Apps

Kids Academy Preschool Learning

Based on the proven Montessori learning method, Kids Academy's Early Learning University is the best educational app for preschoolers. Develops reading, writing and math skills through fascinating games!

FEATURES:
- Over 500 worksheets, games & activities
- Best educational TV shows
- Complete learning plan
- Classic children’s books
- New content added regularly

Each stage of the carefully developed step-by-step curriculum is tailored towards a specific age group ensuring a natural learning curve. The learning process is based on the proven Montessori method.

A vast collection of the best educational videos is available for kids of all ages and interests. There are videos covering almost everything from nursery rhymes to the history of dinosaurs and the structure of the universe.

Kids Academy features a consistent motivational system that promotes and encourages learning. There’s no achievement too insignificant, no gain too small. Every step is encouraged and every little victory is proudly celebrated.

MY THOUGHTS:  Kids Academy had just recently updated their app with more features and learning games. I've used this app with my little one since his Preschool and Kindergarten years and he always enjoys it. He's getting better with most of the subjects (math, reading, writing, spelling, etc.)  Even though now that the games seem a little easy for him, he still likes to play the app once in a while, especially watching the educational TV shows.
